CNN —Scottie Scheffler is a man well-accustomed to making global headlines, but almost never for events beyond the confines of the golf course. In 2014, at 17, as an amateur he made a hole-in-one and the cut on his first PGA Tour start. Without a PGA Tour victory heading into 2022, by April of that year he was a four-time victor, the world No. 1’s image as the self-effacing star of the PGA Tour, a perception he is content to endorse. His 10th PGA Tour title, it made him the first golfer since Woods in 2006 to win a PGA Tour event the week after triumphing at a major.

CNN —As a golf fan watching at a tournament, you have the privilege of being up close to all the action. Then things turned sour on the 14th hole for the 33-year-old American golfer. With the 33-year-old’s progress towards the hole impeded by foliage, Homa was forced to attempt a relief shot back onto the fairway. However, when he did eventually attempt his third shot, Homa’s ball came within inches of hitting a fan, who was filming the golfer. Homa eventually struggled to a quadruple-bogey nine on the par-four 14th hole, ruling him out of contention for the tournament.

Eckroat’s birdie would have stood had his putt fallen during this time, but as it was classed as being “at rest”, an additional penalty stroke saw him card par for the hole. The rule drew the ire of some fans responding to video of the incident posted by the PGA Tour on X. Since the ball took longer than 10 seconds to drop, a stroke was added to Austin Eckroat's score and was counted as a par. pic.twitter.com/xwhGBzIy8z — PGA TOUR (@PGATOUR) March 17, 2024A similar series of events at last year’s PGA Championship involving American Lee Hodges saw the tournament’s rules body issue a statement explaining the penalty. There was no official statement from The Players rules committee for Eckroat’s incident as the penalty was “just the application of the rule,” a spokesperson for the PGA Tour told CNN.

CNN —Needing to make one miracle shot to stay in The Players Championship, it was do-or-die for Ben Silverman. “Let’s go make it happen,” his caddie quipped as he left the range, recorded in a video posted by the PGA Tour on X. pic.twitter.com/sfH6F6iNyl — PGA TOUR (@PGATOUR) March 16, 2024Yet there were no regrets from Silverman, a 14-year professional who has won twice on the Korn Ferry Tour, the PGA Tour’s developmental circuit. “There’s no point in putting so much pressure on it, just do the best I can,” reflected Silverman, who was making his Players Championship debut. CNN —Xander Schauffele capitalized on Wyndham Clark splashing a horror shot into the waters of the fabled 17th hole at TPC Sawgrass to nudge into a one stroke lead and tee up a grandstand finish at The Players Championship. “Why would you not tee the ball up when you can?” questioned Sky Sports Golf broadcaster Ewen Murray. Clark became the latest golfer to fall foul to the 17th hole. After matching Schauffele’s par at the last hole to sign off his two-under 70 round, Clark remains within striking distance of the $4.5 million winner’s purse. Having battled through a neck injury for most of his second round, Scheffler shot 68 as he bids to become the first golfer to ever win back-to-back Players titles.

CNN —Golfer Adam Hadwin had built a superb reputation for staying dry at The Players Championship. On Thursday, the water took its long-awaited revenge by claiming two of his balls – and even a club. Across more than four decades, hundreds of the PGA Tour’s finest players have watched in horror as their tee shot splashed into the lake at TPC Sawgrass’ iconic par-three 17th hole. Yet on all of his 28 previous visits to the penultimate tee at the ‘fifth major’, Canada’s Hadwin had safely found the island green. Ten players had found the lake from the tee during the first round, though New Zealand’s Ryan Fox aced the hole, becoming the 14th golfer in Players history to do so.

From putting greens and par-three holes to full-blown course replicas, the sport is increasingly taking up residence in gardens and backyards as golf enthusiasts of all levels look to shorten their travel time to the tee. California in particular is especially prone to drought, with state officials encouraging its citizens to cut their water usage. Yet “the number one” factor that can hike prices for larger greens, Nappi explains, is — ironically — drainage. Though they don’t require watering, greens sculpted in areas susceptible to heavy rain — such as Florida or Georgia — invite the threat of standing water, which can lead to mold and ruin the playing experience. “You can make it look pretty and beautiful and they love it, but it better play right,” Nappi said.

PGA Tour and LIV Golf are working to extend their proposed merger deadline, which was originally set at Dec. 31, Commissioner Jay Monahan told players in a memo on Sunday. The delay is the latest update in a long and tumultuous saga between the PGA Tour and Saudi Public Investment Fund-backed LIV Golf that has divided players and could dramatically change professional golf if the merger is completed. PGA Tour and LIV are expected to make a formal decision on the combination ahead of the Masters tournament in April, according to The Telegraph, which first reported the extension. Under the structure of the agreement, PGA Tour would hold a permanent controlling interest in the new entity's board of directors. The agreement also includes the DP World Tour, also known as the PGA European Tour.

How Burmese pythons got from Asia to FloridaThe first definitive recording of a Burmese python in the Florida Everglades was in 1979. "Then I just developed this mantra over the years of don't underestimate the Burmese python," he said. Pythons have invaded the Florida Everglades and proven a formidable invasive species that may never be fully eradicated. While state-regulated programs have removed over 13,700 snakes from the Florida Everglades, they're usually the ones found near roads and canal levees. The biggest question researchers need to answer is how many Burmese pythons are actually in Florida at the moment.

Stephenson stepped down as lawmakers appeared likely to start a broad probe into the merger between the PGA Tour and LIV, beginning with Tuesday's Senate hearing. Australia's Lee backs 'tough' PGA Tour changes

March 7 (Reuters) - Reduced fields and no cuts at designated events will be "tough" on players trying to make the grade on the PGA Tour but will ultimately reward good golf, according to Australian Min Woo Lee. The Tour has approved sweeping changes for 2024 in response to the threat posed by the Saudi-backed LIV Golf circuit, drawing a scathing reaction from lower-ranked players. Designated events were announced by the PGA Tour last August to get the best players competing against each other more often. Leading players, including world number three Rory McIlroy, have said the changes are necessary for the tour to be more competitive. "So I agree with it because, I mean, good golf, you got toplay good golf to play in the best tournaments.
Woods skipping Players Championship, next start likely Masters
  + stars: | 2023-03-05 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +1 min
March 4 (Reuters) - Twice-champion Tiger Woods was not listed in the field for next week's The Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, meaning his next start will likely come at the Masters in April. Woods has said his schedule would be limited to the majors and a few other events each year, given the injuries he suffered in a 2021 car crash. Woods' most recent start at The Players Championship came in 2019 when he tied for 30th place a month before he ended an 11-year major title drought at the Masters where he claimed a fifth Green Jacket and 15th career major. The Masters runs April 6-9. Reporting by Frank Pingue in Toronto and Rory Carroll in Los Angeles; Editing by William MallardOur Standards: The Thomson Reuters Trust Principles.
